Quantifying the Unquantifiable: Changing How We Measure Pain
Summary
Pain is currently measured on a qualitative scale first used 70 years ago, leaving many to feel like their experiences aren’t fully understood. With advances in technology, the healthcare industry is exploring how connected care systems, alongside emerging AI tools, can help change this model by quantifying the physiological changes a person undergoes when they are experiencing pain, potentially offering a new way to discuss and treat chronic pain. This session will review the realities of living with pain and how a deeper understanding of the way pain affects the body can improve treatment.

Her pain began in 2016 after a plantar plate tear of the second right toe, followed by three foot surgeries and progressively worsening pain. When she first presented to Dr. Patel’s care team, she required a CAM boot with a rocker-bottom sole and custom inserts with cutouts to reduce pressure, and she relied on a knee scooter for mobility. Michele had failed conservative management and finally proceeded to neurostimulation therapy with a DRG trial in June 2025, followed by permanent implantation in August 2025. Since implant, she no longer uses a knee scooter, is significantly more active, and continues to improve.",
