ACCESS IS POWER: Who Gets to Participate, and Why It Matters

Event ID: PP1162993

Venue: Red River Ballroom (The Thompson Hotel Austin)

View on Official SXSW

Summary

From arenas and sports to workplaces and boardrooms, access determines who gets seen, heard, and valued. Accessibility is cultural power, not just compliance. This challenges the audience to rethink how all spaces – both physical and digital – can include, or exclude, entire communities and identify cultural gatekeepers. It also highlights the dangers of exclusivity and the risks and hard work ahead.

In 2014, he enrolled at the University of Alabama, where he worked on ADA compliance, served on the Diversity Committee representing students with disabilities and veterans, and helped secure funding to build the first-of-its-kind wheelchair basketball arena on campus.\r\rCastle holds a bachelor’s degree in organizational leadership, a master’s in global business management, and a second master’s in advertising and public relations with a focus in marketing communications, all from the University of Alabama. He is pursuing a doctorate in business administration from the University of Maryland Global Campus.\r\rHe has testified before Congress on Social Security for people with disabilities, spoken before the Department of Transportation on Air Carrier Access legislation, and was appointed to the secretary of Veterans Affairs’ Committee on Prosthetics and Special Disabilities. In his role at PVA, he oversees communications and marketing, adaptive sports, architecture, veterans and disability employment, and research and education.\r\rCastle’s wife Stephanie, who he met in 2009, is both his biggest champion and his caregiver.",
