Summary

Entrepreneur and philanthropist John Paul DeJoria joins SXSW to discuss his soon-to-be-released memoir, Success Unshared is Failure – telling the story of his journey from twice experiencing homelessness to co-founding billion-dollar brands like John Paul Mitchell and Patrón Spirits. The book’s title is his personal motto and reflects his life’s mission to invest in people, animals, and the plant through his JP’s Peace Love and Happiness Foundation. DeJoria is celebrating the 15th anniversary of his foundation this year, and has long committed himself to supporting resources which uplift Austin residents, including food, housing opportunity, and support services; infrastructure projects like Patriots' Hall of Dripping Springs and the renovation of the historic Paramount Theater; as well as arts programming like the Austin and ConnectHER film festivals. This conversation will be moderated by Alan Graham, founder and CEO of Mobile Loaves & Fishes in Austin, a long-time partner of JP’s Peace Love & Happiness Foundation. Together, they will discuss some of the stories DeJoria shares in Success Unshared is Failure, including starting JPMS with just a $700 loan, knocking on doors as an encyclopedia salesman, riding motorcycles with the Hells Angels, navigating international conflicts, and so much more.

"details": "John Paul DeJoria epitomizes the American dream, rising from adversity to become a renowned entrepreneur and philanthropist. Co-founding John Paul Mitchell Systems in 1980 with a humble $700 loan, he transformed it into the world's largest privately-held professional hair care company, securing its future with a 360-year trust. In 1989 he co-founded The Patrón Spirits Company, with a mission to create a \"simply perfect\" tequila, the first of its kind ultra-premium agave spirit in the U.S. Following the brand’s acquisition by Bacardi in 2018, John Paul became Chairman Emeritus. In 2023 he parlayed his love of tequila and spirits expertise into a new venture, joining the award-winning Bandero Tequila. Throughout his career, John Paul has made philanthropy his core mission and a mission of his businesses. He established JP’s Peace, Love & Happiness Family Foundation with his family in 2011 to expand his philanthropic giving and contribute to a sustainable planet through investing in people, protecting animals and conserving the environment. His memoir \"Success Unshared is Failure\" will be released this summer, titled to reflect his dedication to sharing success and fostering positive change. ",
