Agridulce (Bittersweet)
Summary
In the Dominican town of Cabarete, bachata is a way of life. While fans across the globe dance to it with fervor, on the island where it was born, Bachata is a spiritual fabric. With five years of filming, director Frank Pavich (Jodorowsky’s Dune) captures the coming of age of Dominican child musicians, their island and the music they are poised to inherit. Generations collide, and the children struggle for balance. Along the way, they’re mentored by Martires de Leon, a world-famous guitarist and teacher at a school devoted to the music that has become the Dominican Republic’s primary export.

"details": "In 1999, Pavich directed N.Y.H.C., a documentary about the New York hardcore music scene. He co-produced Die, Mommie, Die! in 2003, which won the Special Jury Prize at Sundance. In 2013 he directed the critically acclaimed Jodorowsky’s Dune, which premiered at Cannes’ Directors’ Fortnight and was included on the 2014 Academy Awards shortlist for Best Documentary Feature.\n\nFor AGRIDULCE (BITTERSWEET), Pavich teamed up with producer Benjamin de Menil, founder of Academia de Bachata in the Dominican Republic. Their eight year collaboration helped the film to gain rare access to its subjects and their community.",
